Field Trip!

Who cares if it’s January? Not us here at Pooh & Friends!

That’s why we just got back from a field trip at the Botanical Gardens!

First up: a little fun with Thomas the Tank Engine!

Our next stop was a train exhibit. As we made our way through it, we observed all sorts of trains, freight, and passengers, with scenery made from real plants, flowers, barks, and even pieces of bridges and buildings!

Besides a load of fun, the field trip served as an exciting way to revisit the topic of trains and their uses, something we studied here at Pooh & Friends last year.

Cribs and Safety

This month new government safety standards take effect for all cribs sold in the country: The manufacture and sale of cribs with drop-side rails will be banned; mattress supports will be stronger; crib hardware will be more durable and cribs safety will be more rigorous. New research found that almost 10,000 infants were being injured in cribs, playpen and bassinets every year. Here are five other points to bear in mind. 1. Keep the crib bare. A tight fitting mattress sheet is all you need. That means no sleep positioners, blankets, pillows, or stuffed animals. While baby stores tend to display cribs with bumpers, they’re a no-no as well, due to the risk of suffocation. During the winter you can use a sleep sack to keep your baby warm. 2. Lower the crib mattress to the bottom setting as soon as your infant can pull herself up. Falling out was the single biggest cause of crib injuries, according to the research. 3. Put your baby “back” to sleep. Place you baby to sleep on her back, not on her belly, to significantly reduce her chances of sudden infant syndrome (SIDS). 4. Skip the crib tent. The latest word on these much-loved tot-containing contraptions is that they could be a strangulation hazard. Once your child is able to climb out of her crib, it’s time to make the switch to a big-kid bed.

The Wonders of Science Through Nature

The Apple Orchard

When we think of science we of think of someone serious looking in a lab coat mixing bubbling chemicals. We must rethink our notion of science.  We should, instead, think of children digging in dirt looking for worms or other life under our feet, scooping pulp from a pumpkin, or taking care of a pet.  Children learn through play and by exploring the world around them.  Outdoor sensory play provides children with delightful ways to experience the joy of self discovery, especially when these activities are child initiated and supported by parents or teachers. Taking walks through trails, woods are excellent ways to stimulate questions, inquiries, and discussions. The backyard is a great place for children to experience nature. With summer fast approaching, most of the children time should be spent outdoors. Spending time outdoors brings the potential of many fun, meaningful experiences and lots of treasured memories.

Children Learn What They Live

Children Learn What They Live

By Dorothy Law Nolte

If children live with criticism, they learn to condemn.

If children live with hostility, they learn to fight.

If children live with ridicule, they learn to be shy.

If children live with shame, they learn to feel guilty.

If children live with encouragement, they learn confidence.

If children live with tolerance, they learn to be patient.

If children live with praise, they learn to appreciate.

If children live with acceptance, they learn to love.

If children live with approval, they learn to like themselves.

If children live with honesty, they learn truthfulness.

If children live with security, they learn to have faith in themselves and others.

If children live with friendliness, they learn the world is a nice place in which to live.

On a Mission

Help your child stay strong in mind and body all summer.  Even when the school year ends, children continue to learn , grow and develop at Pooh and Friends. Not only does Pooh and Friends keep offering our enriched educational child care during the months of June, July and August, we provide it in tandem with scheduling that can fit the needs and wants of your family all summer long. Our curriculum includes plenty of outdoor activities, nature, music, animals, arts and crafts, games, and cooking. In a very relaxed atmosphere, the children are encouraged to make choices with the activities, take risks, play and socialize with friends. Weekly field trips are planned to area parks, zoos, and museums. We welcome full timers and part timers, toddlers, preschoolers, and school aged children. Summer camp begins June 20.  Call to sign up today.
